What Are SSR and SSEP?
Somatosensory Evoked Potentials (SSEP) are electrically recorded nervous responses due to a sensory stimulus, typically through skin or peripheral nerve. How the Tests Work
Somatosensory Evoked Potentials (SSEP)
During testing of SSEP:
Mild electrical stimuli are given to the peripheral nerves (usually the median or tibial nerve).
Electrodes on the back, neck, and head measure the electrical responses as they travel along the spinal cord to the brain.
The data provide the amplitude and timing of conduction of the nerve signals.
SSEP is painless and harmless and generally takes 30 to 90 minutes depending upon the areas that are tested.
Sympathetic Skin Response (SSR)
During testing of SSR:
Electrodes are placed on the feet and hands.
A submaximal electrical or sound stimulus is applied to activate the sympathetic nervous system.
The device measures skin conductance changes related to sweat gland activity.
SSR is often used to assess autonomic dysfunction, e.g., that seen in diabetes, small fiber neuropathy, and other systemic illnesses.
