Your heart health is of the highest priority at CerebrumCor Clinic. Our most up-to-date and exacting diagnostic test is Transesophageal Echocardiography (TEE) – an advanced ultrasound scan that gives you very clear images of your heart and related structures. As a departure from the standard echocardiogram, TEE gives you brighter, closer pictures by positioning the ultrasound probe within the esophagus, which sits right behind the heart.
TEE is particularly helpful if other types of heart imaging are not giving us sufficient detail or clarity. Our skilled cardiology team uses TEE to diagnose a wide range of cardiovascular illnesses with unmatched accuracy, allowing us to recommend the best treatment for you.
What is Transesophageal Echocardiography?
Transesophageal Echocardiography (TEE) is another less invasive sound wave imaging study that produces excellent pictures of the heart using higher frequency sound waves. Rather than taking these images from outside of the chest like a regular transthoracic echocardiogram, for TEE, a thin and flexible probe is placed inside the esophagus. Since the esophagus is right beside the heart, this technique does much better quality images and even better visualization of heart structures.
TEE is typically employed to assess:
The structure and function of heart valves
Blood clots or tumors within the heart
Congenital heart disease
Aortic disease like aneurysms or dissections
Cryptogenic stroke etiologies
Endocarditis (heart valve infection)

At CerebrumCor Clinic, we blend empathetic care with advanced technology. Here’s why patients choose us for their TEE procedures:
State-of-the-art technology: We employ the newest TEE imaging technology to provide maximum diagnostic precision.

Holistic treatment: TEE findings are evaluated in conjunction with our multidisciplinary heart treatment team to guide complete treatment planning.
What to Expect During a TEE Procedure
Prior to your TEE at CerebrumCor Clinic, our staff will walk you through each step so that you will be prepared and comfortable. The procedure typically involves the following process:
Preparation: You are not required to eat or drink for approximately 6 hours before the test. You might receive a small sedative to calm you.
Monitoring: We will continue to monitor your heart rate, blood pressure, and oxygen levels during the procedure for your protection.
Insertion of the probe: Once your throat is anesthetized with a local anesthetic spray, the doctor will insert a lubricated probe very slowly down your esophagus.
Imaging: The probe will send out ultrasound waves, and good pictures of your heart are seen in real time. The procedure typically takes 30–60 minutes.
Recovery: After the exam, you’ll be observed for a short time as the sedation wears off. Most patients can go home the same day, with minimal discomfort.
Is TEE Safe?
Transesophageal echocardiography is safe and well tolerated if done by trained staff. In CerebrumCor Clinic, we use all the safety precautions to avoid any risk. Mild throat irritation, hoarseness that is temporary, or reaction to sedation are unlikely but possible side effects. Serious complications are extremely rare.
Who May Need a TEE?
Your cardiologist may order a TEE if:
A regular echocardiogram was not informative enough
You have symptoms of heart valve disease or cryptogenic stroke
There are suspicions of a heart infection or blood clot
You’re having cardiac surgery and high-quality heart images need to be taken
TEE allows early and accurate diagnosis of life-threatening conditions, and its accuracy guides treatments like surgery, medications, or endoscopy.
